New Orleans,

Louisiana

New Orleans, coextensive with Louisiana's New Orleans Parish (county), is one of the largest cities in the South, the nations's second largest port, and the third largest port in the world. It was founded in 1718 by the Sieur de bienville and named for Philippr II, duke of Orleans. Four years later it became the capital of the French colony of Louisiana. In1762 the city passed to Spain, but remained culturally French.

New Orleans was returned to Franch in 1800 and in 1803 came under U.S. jurisdiction with the Louisiana Purchase. It developed into a flourishing cotton and slave-trade center, and was an important stopover on the southern routes to the west. After Andrew Jackson's victory over the British at New Orleans (January 8,1815), the city's properity reached great heights, and New Orleans became famous for gaiety and elegance.

Next door to the Lighthouse, the Marine Science Center features state-of-the-art turtle and seabird rehabilitation centers along with many fascinating exhibits on coastal and marine ecosystems. Observe aquatic life in the center's aquariums, or take a leisurely stroll through the coastal hammock.
